Beautifully Broken

I love faith-based movies based on true stories and history. They continually prove to me that God is in the details of our lives. Beautifully Broken shows that God does care about us and is involved in our day-to-day lives.

The African country of Rwanda experienced Civil War from 1990 to 1994. It culminated in the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, where an estimated 800,000 people from the Tutsi ethnic group were slaughtered in just 100 days. Beautifully Broken is based upon the true story of three families impacted and intertwined by the horror of Rwanda's killing fields - two from Rwanda and one from Nashville, Tennessee.

The film is a heavy, serious drama. It may not be for everyone. However, I thought the filmmakers showed restraint in trying to avoid direct images of the bloody violence, and the one instance of sexual assault.

I came away from this movie being reminded that we live in a sinful, evil world where bad things do happen. However, this movie also imparted on me that our past pains and sins don't define who we are, and who we become. God cares deeply about families everywhere. Sometimes He uses the most unlikely twists and turns of our lives and relationships to accomplish His good purposes.
